Dec. 3–5 in DC: Christkindlmarkt at the Heurich House Museum

Christian Heurich was a pioneer not just in the D.C. craft brewing scene, but also in the push to support small businesses. An entrepreneur himself—one who would go on to enjoy a rich legacy as the area’s perhaps best-known brewer of craft beer—he commissioned his mansion to be created almost exclusively by local artisans. From the ornately carved fireplaces to the Conservatory’s sculptures, the fixtures represent the handiwork of D.C.’s artisan community in the late 19th century. Now more than a century later, the Christkindlmarkt at the Heurich House Museum keeps Heurich’s love of entrepreneurship alive by hosting dozens of local vendors each year.

Although the event had to go virtual in 2020, this year’s market will be back in person from December 3rd to the 5th. It will be held entirely outdoors in the Castle Garden with local craftspeople setting up festive booths to sell their wares. From handmade jewelry and textiles to holiday ornaments and decor, there’s something for everyone in the holiday village—and you won’t have to worry about shipping delays. After you’ve wrapped up your shopping, head to the bar for a tasting of Christian Heurich’s legendary Senate Beer, then learn more about him at the mini outdoor history exhibit.
